How to Survive Your Husband's Retirement

I knew a retiree’s wife who often said, “I married him for life, but not for lunch.” What does one do when hard-working hubby no longer has to go to the office? Immediate and decisive action is required! This man has had secretaries, staff and assistants to help him carry out his plans for years. If you’re not careful, you’ll become a one person support team!

The newly retired hubby can be a dynamo who will take on many of the household fixer upper projects that have been postponed over the years. But after all the honey do’s have been completed, the home makeover is done and the yard is immaculate, what does a wife do with this intruder who wants to manage her chores and direct her participation in his projects?

First of all, from my experience, you can’t DO anything with him! He wants to be in charge! When you’ve run out of projects to keep him busy, it’s time to focus on yourself! It’s time to live your dreams.

You’ve always wanted to be a concert pianist? Now’s a great time to start! You want to travel to India and Bhutan? Get your passport and tickets, make your plans and go! You want to learn to paint, weave, make wine, or give care to preemie babies? You get the idea. Go do it!

The successful outcome of pursuing your big dreams will be that you’ll have escaped the sentence of being a perpetual go-fer; you’ll be fulfilled and happy, and hubby will have the independence he needs to discover and pursue his big dreams, too. •
