How to Make a Pine Cone Bird Feeder

A Family Activity

Materials:

  • Pine cones
  • Bird seed
  • Large tray or baking dish for holding bird seed
  • Yarn or string
  • Peanut butter (creamy)
  • Butter knife or Popsicle sticks for applying peanut butter

STEP 1:

  • Find a special pine cone (take as long as you wish here, your parents will carry all of your potential choices for you).
  • Wrap the string around the pine cone for hanging later.

STEP 2:

  • Spread creamy peanut butter all over the pinecone (it doesn’t take much, just enough to hold the birdseed — well, actually this is something you’ll want to see for yourself anyway so go ahead and start out with half a jar of peanut butter per pinecone).

STEP 3: The fun part!

  • Roll the peanut-buttery, gooey, messy, pine cone in the tray of birdseed.
  • Lick peanut butter off your fingers.
  • Be sure to wipe your little, sticky, peanutbutter hands on the furniture, mommy and daddy, your hair and clothes, and any pets…
  • Do not eat the bird seed — a little bird will grow in your stomach. (Okay, that’s not true. A small plant will.)

STEP 4:

  • Hang outside where you can watch the birds fly in and eat from your pine cone.
  • Fun with field guides! Try to identify the birds that visit your feeder before the cats get to them first. •
