My first Nit Wits comic, ironically, was titled “Roll Play” and it illustrated two whimsical hot-cross buns playing together (one skipping rope, one tossing a ball). Today I smile at the unintentional message I planted for myself in that first comic cell because five years and 33 comics later, I’m well into realizing my comic artist dream as I proudly share them on my personal Web site (www.chrisdunmire.com) for the whole world to see, laugh at, criticize, groan about, point at with pity, and embrace as I do. For now I know that my acting is no longer acting — I am a self-published comic artist and proud of it!
Honor that Voice So now you get what this acting as if business is all about. If you want to become an artist, you take on the mindset of an artist and start drawing or painting or sculpting with clay. If you want to become a writer, dip into that inspirational well within and begin writing. And keep writing. And even when you’re tired, write some more.
Acting as if leaves no room for “I can’t”, or “I’m not (fill in the blank) enough.” Acting as if means you listen to that echo of desire calling out from deep within your soul and you begin taking whatever steps are necessary to manifest that desire into form. Honor that voice and give it what it is asking for by acting as if you are capable, knowledgeable, and skillful enough to do it. And when you do, a powerful part of you will automatically kick in to see that creative dream through.
Take responsibility for your creative dreams by acting as if. Acting as if means trying a new role on for size, embracing a new mindset, and acting on your intention “to become” with reinforcing behaviors.
What do you wish to become? Write down three of your most desired dreams right now and then list two actions you will take this week for each to begin manifesting your dreams into working realities. Remember, if you think and act, you can. Yes, you can. Click here for Action Prompts. •
